Difference between ASTM A513 and ASTM A500 rectangular tubing

ASTM A500 is the standard specification for cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel structural pipe in round, square, and rectangular shapes. ASTM A500 is the most common specification for hollow structural sections (HSS) in North America. ASTM A513 is an ASTM standard for resistance welded carbon and alloy steel pipe used in mechanical structures. This article will talk about the difference between ASTM A513 and ASTM A500 rectangular tubing.

1. Price

ASTM A500 rectangular tubes are generally more expensive than ASTM A513 tubes due to their superior manufacturing process and higher-grade steel. If your project demands high performance and strict specifications, ASTM A500 would be the preferable choice.

2. Application

ASTM A500 rectangular tubes are highly durable with a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi, making them suitable for structural applications like building support. In contrast, ASTM A513 tubes, with a minimum yield strength of 30,000 psi, are more commonly used in commercial and consumer applications, such as lawn mower handles. ASTM A513 tubes are easier to bend and less suited for load-bearing applications, which is reflected in their lower cost compared to ASTM A500.

3. Manufacturing Process

The primary distinction between ASTM A513 and A500 rectangular tubes lies in their manufacturing processes. ASTM A513 tubes are produced through resistance welding, similar to ERW welded steel pipes. On the other hand, ASTM A500 tubes are manufactured using either seamless or spiral welding methods, which are considered more advanced, contributing to their higher cost.

4. Chemical Composition

ASTM A513 tubes are made from 1008-1015 steel, primarily composed of iron with a small carbon content, making them suitable for applications requiring tight dimensional tolerances and smooth surface finishes. ASTM A500 tubes, however, are made from a higher grade steel known as A1085, which contains higher carbon content and elements like silicon and manganese. This composition gives A500 tubes greater load-bearing capacity compared to A513 tubes.
