SSAW steel pipe is a spiral seam steel pipe made from strip steel coils, extruded at regular temperature, and welded using an automatic double-wire double-sided submerged arc welding process.

 

During the welding of spiral steel pipes, multiple factors can influence the process. Proper adjustment of the forming and welding height, along with the spatial dynamic welding curve, is crucial to prevent thermal cracks and ensure high-quality welds.

 

Forming Adjustments

The molding process should be adjusted and controlled through the following aspects:

- Accurate Calculation of Forming Process Parameters:

Ensure precise calculations and proper adjustments of the molding process parameters when setting up.

- Fine-Tuning for Strip Deformation:

Adjustments should minimize the curvature difference on the discharge side of the free edge to control strip deformation during forming.

- Height Adjustment of Backing Roller:

Properly adjust the height of the backing roller during welding to avoid excessive local stress at the meshing point.

 

Welding Control Factors

- Welding Position:

Avoid welding in positions where the spiral submerged arc welded pipe’s main deformation zone is not involved. Uphill welding can lead to insufficient deformation and increased risk of internal seam tearing.

- Joint Positioning:

Keep the joint close to the center to prevent mushrooming and improper saddle height, which can hinder impurity discharge from the weld pool and induce slag cracks and stress issues.

- Overlap and Parameter Control:

Ensure the overlap amount is sufficient without having excessive welding parameters. For twin-wire welding, maintain an appropriate distance between the wires to prevent elongation of the molten pool, which can be adversely affected by vibrations and forces during pre-processing.

 

By implementing these controls and adjustments, the welding quality of SSAW steel pipes can be significantly improved, minimizing defects and ensuring the reliability of the welded joints.
